News From The Field |
It is with a sad heart that NFC FC Chisholm Creek's Cuttin Loose was put to sleep April 23rd after being diagnosed with an inoperable spinal tumor. Only 5 years old he racked up an impressive win list. He was always a threat when turned loose. He was a hell of a dog and will be sadly missed. His offspring are winning and will carry on his winning ways. May he rest in peace wherever he may be.
Cutter was misdiagnosed and did not have a spinal tumor. He actually had a grass seed travel into his spine causing an infection which in turn caused the symptoms he had. The vet said the seed was actually embedded in a vertabrae. |

Kate placed 3rd in the GSPCA National Amateur Gundog.
Kate's 1st series was good enough to get her back in the 2nd series but wasn't one of her best performances.
 |
It went like this--- Kate started off well forward and made the 1st crossing as we were riding up over the hill she was honoring her brace mate, once we went on she went forward deep in the draw and had to be rounded up and brought to the front. The draw was the natural objective but she needed to turn to be out front. She scoured the hillside to no avail. Scenting conditions were poor, high humidity and it was dead calm when she ran. She was high on the fence line running towards the orchard when scout Gary Goertz called point. They were shooting birds on course for a retrieve and the gunner, myself and the judge rode up and worked the point. The chucker flew on the opposite side of the cover and gunner missed, she stayed through shot and we went on. Working back to the south I saw a chucker fly as Kate rounded the corner. A perfect stop to flush. I was also able to put more birds up in front of her. That pretty much ended the half hour. The judges wanted to see a retrieve so we set one up and she did well.
The 2nd series is 45 minutes and they reversed the course and added more ground to cover. The weather was perfect Saturday morning, about 50 degrees and a light wind out of the north with a light rain just before she ran .Turned loose both dogs ran forward, the other handler and I decided to ride hard to the gate as a number of dogs were heading north way of course. We both successfully got our dogs turned and heading west on course. Kate made a swing around the pond and pointed. I didn't like the way she looked when she stopped. After a brief attempt to flush I elected to go on and not relocate. As soon as I collared Kate my scout saw the bird about 50 feet to the left. The judge saw the bird and we went on. It was pretty much a non event and counted against me more than the dog. Turned loose Kate made a big cast to the south towards a distance pond. She looked good and came back up a brushy waterway I sent her over the hill towards the far draw. When we topped the hill she was standing. A long ride ensued and she had a covey nailed. She looked like a million bucks. Cast away she hunted north up the draw, the other dog finely joined us, he went way up the hillside while she went forward. She was rewarded with another find CC Papion honored from quite a distance. All was in order.
 |
There must have been 75 riders in the gallery taking notice. Cast away she hunted up thru the valley, point was called for Papion and she stopped and I wasn't sure if she was pointing or backing, after a brief attempt to flush I told the judge I thought she was backing and decided to go on. She pointed another large covey working the covey like the veteran she is. Cut loose topping the hill Papion was on point and she came in for a back all in order. We decided to have the scouts hold the dog at the fence while we went to the gate and rode over to them to turn loose. That hill is loaded with Chucker running everywhere, its a mine field of sorts. Cut loose both dogs headed down the hill, Joe and I saw a Chucker fly down the hill in the area we last saw the dogs. Point was called and both dogs were standing, more of a stop to flush than a find, a shot was fired and we went on. I had enough birds and just wanted to finish the brace out in the open. Cast away both dogs ran big to the front, Kate showed on the far end of the hillside were the trees ended and pointed. I could not find a bird initially so I went deep, I saw a running quail and it wouldn't fly. I told the judge the bird was running and he said MAKE IT FLY, it was a good 100 feet away. I finally got it to fly and the thankfully the judges Marshall saw the bird. I shot and went on she finished well to the front at time. When I got back to the trailer I had fired 6 times so I have forgotten a couple of finds.

| Cutter just 3 years old takes 3rd at the AKC National All-Age.
His cast off was big after making the turn he cast down into the hillside and showed on ridge right of course. He decided to take the ridge around towards the birdy cover. He was not seen for 5 minutes and Scout (Robbi) showed him reaming the bottom to the front. He swung the hillside back towards handler and slammed a big covey of Quail. Point was called and a long ride ensued to the dog. Cutter was standing tall as Keith went in to flush, a large covey Quail lifted and several birds flew to within a foot of his head. He never flinched. Cast away Cutter caught the front and made a huge cast to the north, Scout Robbi persuaded Cutter to go front and he went on point in orchard area. This proved to be an unproductive. Cast away Cutter caught the front and a hard ride followed to catch up. He made a cast to the north somewhat lateral but where the cover was. He was rewarded with another find on Quail.
This was a great All-Age find, at least a half mile away. He had a single nailed, all was in order. Cast away he stayed to the north and finished strong. He ran at 3 Wednesday afternoon in the last brace.
The callback. They were using Chukar in the callback for the retrieve. Keith got Cutter on point and went for the flush, gunners were in position. The bird wouldn't fly and Keith had to chase it down quite a distance from the dog. Finally flushed and shot a good distance from the dog. Keith sent Cutter and an excellent retrieve was made.
Thanks to Keith and Robbi Gulledge for all their hard work on Cutter. They got 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the National.
